Where are we and what should I be doing?
April 3, 2025
Finished EM algorithm.
Nex time look at propsed project on EM and start Monte Carlo.
March 28, 2025
We are about to do the details for the EM algorithm for
the mixture of univariate normals model.
Homework 3 is due April 4.
March 21, 2025
We have just done rmsprop in section 8 of the optimization notes.
Homework 3 is on the webpage.
Due March 31.
March 6, 2025
We finished the notes on the SVD.
After the break we start the notes on optimization.
Homework 2 is due March 10.
February 27, 2025
We finished the notes The Multivariate Normal and the Choleski and Eigen Decompositions
and will the SVD (singular value decomposition next week).
Let's make homework 2 due March 7.
February 25, 2025
Just about to do properties of the Mulitvariate normal via the Cholesky decomposition.
February 20, 2025
We got to the chain rule derivation of the univariate change of variable formula
in the notes "The Multivariate Normal and the Choleski and Eigen Decompositions".
February 14, 2025
Last class we got to PV = PV1 + PV2 in section 5 of the notes on Linear Algebra Review.
Homework 1 is due February 17th which is this coming Monday.
You don't have to make the homework pretty, just show enough results/pictures
that we can tell you that you made an effort.
Let's agree that you can and should use AI (chatGPT, claude) for the homework and throughout the class
but not on the final project.
February 8, 2025
The week of January 28,30 was a right off because Rob could not talk.
Last week (February 4 and 6) we went through the python script on vectorization and the
likelihood for the logit.
Homework 1 is on the webpage.
Due February 17.
January 27, 2025
Folks,
I have laryngitis and cannot talk.
So, I cannot even zoom!!
Try to go over the links on the webpage under
"A first look at simple logistic regression".
I'm hoping to go over calling C++ from R on Thursday.
Assumming I'm better by then!
January 24, 2025
We are done looking at the hello worlds in R and Python.
Now we start working through the notes on the web page.
We start by computing the logit likelihood and discussing vectorization
and calling C++ from R.
January 21, 2025
Going through the Hello world in R.
Just about to do the multiple regression of y=price on x=(mileage, year).
Next time should get into the python version.
January 16, 2025
We are just going throught R Hello world:
R Hello.
We just got to Using the ggplot R-package, before Categroical variables.
You should be getting your R or python or both installs up.
First class is January 14, noon
Note that classes will be dual mode, in-person and on zoom:
